CHAPTER ELEVEN
Vanessa
I SAT IN my room feeling sorry for myself for most of the night. I hadn’t stayed in here since Sam and I finally slept together. Now the room felt cold and lonely, which was fitting because that’s exactly how I felt. Sam had decided to leave me alone after he dropped the bomb of the arms dealer on me. I didn’t know if I was happy about that or sad. Part of me wondered if he was just getting tired of me and didn’t really care about my feelings anymore. Maybe that’s why it seemed like it was so easy for him to tell me.
A large part of me was angry at him for holding back information from me. It seemed to be the mentality of the men in my life to keep me in the dark either to protect me or because they thought it wasn’t necessary that I know what’s going on. It needed to stop. I needed to be in control of my life and I couldn’t do that if information was kept from me.
After a lot of thinking, I decided the best way to deal with this was to get over my pity party and go talk to Sam about where we went from here. I walked out of the bedroom and went in search of Sam. It wasn’t hard to find him. I followed the smell of burning food.
Sam was in the kitchen attempting to cook a meal and Chris, Jules, and John were in there helping him. Well, they were attempting to. Chris had on my pink, ruffly apron that Sam had picked up for me. It was tiny on his large frame and totally contradicted everything about the man. He was standing in front of the stove, mixing something in a pot.
Jules was leaning over the counter, reading a recipe to Sam and John. “Alright, dry the chicken thoroughly with a towel and brown on all sides in the hot fat. Don’t fucking burn it this time.”
“You want to do it, asshole?” Sam shot back at him.
“Hey, we’re doing this for your girlfriend.”
“Jules, this is fucking burning over here. What’s next?” Chris asked from the stove.
“Okay, hold on. Let me see.” I watched as Jules read off the same page he just read from to Sam. “Okay, pour in cognac and ignite with a lighted match.”
“In the pastry mix?”
Jules shrugged. “They’re French.”
“I guess,” Chris said as he picked up the cognac. I watched in hilarity as he poured in half the bottle of cognac and then lit the match and threw it into the pot. It was like watching in slow motion. I wanted to yell out at him to stop, but instead just watched in fascination. Flames shot up from the pot and Chris jumped back, but not in time to stop the flames from spreading to his shirt and the apron. John ran over and threw a lid on the pot and then grabbed a towel and tackled Chris to the ground.
